IKEA Dresser Hack

March 7, 2019

While working on our bedroom refresh, we knew we wanted to update our dresser. We originally wanted to replace our raw pine IKEA dresser with a vintage one, but after searching with no luck to what we had in mind, we decided to just update this dresser which was definitely the budget-friendly option!

Our Master Bedroom is small, so we wanted this dresser to look seamless in the room and not look like it takes up too much space. After giving our walls a fresh coat of paint, we decided to use the leftover paint to give this dresser a makeover. We know many of you like the raw wood look, but to us, it just wasn’t blending with our Modern Cottage aesthetic. You can view our Inspiration Board for our Master Bedroom, here.

Here is what our dresser looked like before.

With some primer, paint, & new hardware, we updated this piece in just a day and love how it brightens up the space.

Step by Step :

01 // We removed the drawers and primed the dresser and drawer fronts with 3 light coats of primer to ensure the heavy knots were covered and wouldn’t bleed through. We used a small roller for the primer.

02 // We then rolled 1 coat of BM White Dove in Eggshell Finish (same paint that is on our walls) over the entire piece and let dry. Once the first coat was dry, we went back with a brush and painted the second coat of BM White Dove to show brush strokes. We then touched up any areas and applied a very thin 3rd coat with a brush. They key is to use thinner multiple coats rather than fewer heavy coats to prevent drips and clumps.

03 // We used these inexpensive brass knobs to complete the look.

We still need to order a mirror to add to our vintage frame, but for now, the open frame and minimal artwork by Deb Presutto is making us happy every time we walk into our room.
