Ready in just under two hours, this skillet focaccia bread is a family favorite! Serve with soups, pastas, or experiment with toppings to create a stand alone meal!
Focaccia Bread origin: Italy. “Focaccia is a flat leavened oven-baked Italian bread. In some contemporary places, such as Rome, it is a style of pizza, also called pizza bianca. Focaccia may be served as a side dish or as sandwich bread and it may be round, rectangular, or square shape.”
You can absolutely make this in any round or square dish, but I love the flavor that the skillet adds… and the presentation as well 🙂
Here are my favorite kitchen tools I use to make this…
Ingredients
DOUGH
- 2 c All-Purpose Flour
- 1/2 tsp Rosemary Salt
- 1 1/2 tsp Instant Yeast
- 1/2 tsp Sugar
- 3/4 c warm water (130°)
- 2 tsp Olive Oil
TOPPING
- Olive Oil
- Rosemary Salt (I make my own, but you can use a quality sea salt with chopped fresh Rosemary)
- Parmesan cheese
- Italian seasoning
- Red Pepper Flakes
Directions
- In a stand mixer with the dough hook attached, mix together flour and salt
- In a separate bowl or measuring pitcher, warm your water to 130°, add sugar and sprinkle yeast on top, stir, cover for 5+ min until foamy
- Pour yeast over into flour and knead on low for 3-5 minutes
- Add 2 tsp of olive oil and continue to let the stand mixer knead for 1-2 more minutes
- Dough should be pillowy soft. If the dough is too sticky, add 1 tbsp of flour and knead an additional 1-2 minutes
- Place your dough in an oiled bowl, cover (I like to cover with a damp towel) and let rise for 1 hour (I let my dough rise in the oven with the light on since it is a warmer environment)
- Once your dough has risen and doubled in size, fold it over 4 times
- Oil a skillet, place the dough into the skillet and spread with your hands and indent with your fingers
- Cover and let rise for 10-15 min
- Preheat oven to 350°
- Using your fingers, make indentions in the dough (again), drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt, 1 tsp of Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes and freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- Place your skillet in the oven and bake for 20 minutes
- Turn the oven up to 400° and bake for 5 additional minutes until golden on top
- Remove from oven, let rest 5 minutes before slicing!
