Simple and Delicious Skillet Focaccia Bread

January 6, 2024

Ready in just under two hours, this skillet focaccia bread is a family favorite! Serve with soups, pastas, or experiment with toppings to create a stand alone meal!

Focaccia Bread origin: Italy. “Focaccia is a flat leavened oven-baked Italian bread. In some contemporary places, such as Rome, it is a style of pizza, also called pizza bianca. Focaccia may be served as a side dish or as sandwich bread and it may be round, rectangular, or square shape.”

You can absolutely make this in any round or square dish, but I love the flavor that the skillet adds… and the presentation as well 🙂

Here are my favorite kitchen tools I use to make this…

Ingredients

DOUGH

  • 2 c All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 tsp Rosemary Salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp Instant Yeast
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • 3/4 c warm water (130°)
  • 2 tsp Olive Oil

TOPPING

  • Olive Oil
  • Rosemary Salt (I make my own, but you can use a quality sea salt with chopped fresh Rosemary)
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Italian seasoning
  • Red Pepper Flakes

Directions

  1. In a stand mixer with the dough hook attached, mix together flour and salt
  2. In a separate bowl or measuring pitcher, warm your water to 130°, add sugar and sprinkle yeast on top, stir, cover for 5+ min until foamy
  3. Pour yeast over into flour and knead on low for 3-5 minutes
  4. Add 2 tsp of olive oil and continue to let the stand mixer knead for 1-2 more minutes
  5. Dough should be pillowy soft. If the dough is too sticky, add 1 tbsp of flour and knead an additional 1-2 minutes
  6. Place your dough in an oiled bowl, cover (I like to cover with a damp towel) and let rise for 1 hour (I let my dough rise in the oven with the light on since it is a warmer environment)
  7. Once your dough has risen and doubled in size, fold it over 4 times
  8. Oil a skillet, place the dough into the skillet and spread with your hands and indent with your fingers
  9. Cover and let rise for 10-15 min
  10. Preheat oven to 350°
  11. Using your fingers, make indentions in the dough (again), drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt, 1 tsp of Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes and freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  12. Place your skillet in the oven and bake for 20 minutes
  13. Turn the oven up to 400° and bake for 5 additional minutes until golden on top
  14. Remove from oven, let rest 5 minutes before slicing!
