One area on our project list for this year is our dining room. It has been a while since we have updated this space and it needs it- the caning on our dining chairs are breaking, the table needs to be sanded down, and we have an empty wall that needs some serious attention!
While searching for ideas for our dining room, we sourced and created a modern dining room design with some beautiful pieces from AllModern. We love curating unique spaces and in this post we are going to provide a few helpful tips on how to add character and warmth into a room while designing with modern pieces.

Our tips for adding character into a modern space
Tip 01 : Artwork can bring SO much to a space… whether it is a vintage piece or modern, choose art that resonates with you or makes you feel something. When designing a room, I like to choose art that helps bring the color story full circle. You can shop my favorite artwork here, here, and here.
Tip 02 : Don’t be afraid to blend different materials and mix pieces together. I have never been a fan of furniture “sets”. Rather, I like to start with one or two key pieces and build the room with different elements. For this design, I started by choosing a medium wood tone table and natural sideboard with a marble top. After choosing those two pieces of furniture, I mimicked the brass details on the sideboard with the light fixtures, and the lighter wood tone of the sideboard into the leather bench. The minimal white chairs add a nice contrast to the table while also blending with the marble top sideboard. It’s all about keeping things cohesive, while creating character by mixing different pieces together. And don’t forget to add in vintage or found decor items to finish the space!
Tip 03 : Layering. Add warmth to your design by bringing in textures like the woven rug and throw blanket. Layering with different textiles also helps to soften the contrasting elements in a space.
