What We Are Growing In Our Spring Garden

Garden — March 14, 2024

We spent the last few days sowing some seeds into our garden after doing some major cleanup from the winter months. It is hard to believe we are already in spring and experiencing 80º weather. In Northeast Florida zone 9a our spring weather is most gardener’s summer weather so our planting season looks a little bit different, but I have had some questions as to what we are planting so I thought it would be easiest to put together this post and to share everything we are planting.

It has been a while since we last shared a garden post– truth is, last summer’s growing season was hard… it was so hot and we were attacked left and right with pests or the dreaded heat. We also didn’t properly replenish our soil before planting last year which I think greatly hurt us so at the end of this post, I am sharing what soil and fertilizer we are using.

We purchase all of our seeds from Johnny’s Seeds.

Vegetables

  • Tomatoes (Indeterminate and Determinate)
  • Peppers
  • Potatoes
  • Okra
  • Squash
  • Pole Beans
  • Bush Beans
  • Lima Beans

Tomato Varieties : Black Cherry, Gold Nugget, Candy Bell, Supersweet 100, and Galahad F1 OG Hybrid Determinate

Peppers : Sweet Purple Pepper and Green Bell Pepper

Potatoes : Organic Yukon Gold (we are growing these in grow bags)

Squash : Hybrid Yellow Summer Squash Tempest F1 OG and Zephyr F1 (this year we are growing our squash and tomatoes together)

Lime Beans : Fordhook 242 (this is our first year growing Lima Beans)

Okra : Jambalaya 2.0 F1 (this is a new variety of Okra we are growing this year that only grows 2-3 ft tall which we are growing alone in our back bed)

Pole Beans : Seychelles OG (Justin just built a trellis from bed to bed that we will use to grow our Pole Beans on and our Indeterminate Tomatoes)

Bush Beans : Provider (we are growing a lot more Bush Beans this year to better serve our family of 5)

We have three beds total- In one bed, we are growing our Bush Beans, Pole Beans, and Lima Beans together. In another bed, we are growing herbs, tomatoes and squash, and in our last back bed we are growing Okra.

Flowers

  • Cosmos – Cupcake Whites and Mixed Variety
  • Sweet Pea
  • Teddy Bear Dwarf Sunflower
  • Cherry Brandy Rudbeckia
  • Salvia
  • Hybrid Tea Rose
  • Borage

Plants & Herbs

  • Feathertop Ornamental Grasses
  • Lemon Grass
  • Catnip
  • Mint
  • Rosemary
  • Sage
  • Basil
  • English Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Parsley

Lemon Grass, Catnip and Mint are going to be planted in four corner planters around the garden in an effort to help with mosquitos.

A lot of our herbs are mixed in with our vegetables in our garden beds.

Soil

After pulling things up and cleaning the beds from winter, we tilled the soil and added 4-5 bags to each garden bed of this soil. This is the soil my Mom used in her garden and has had a lot of great success. I also added Coco Coir to the containers where I am growing our flowers. I also purchased this to use once our plants are producing vegetables.

Are you planting anything this spring? Would love to know what some of your favorite things to grow are!
